Tenacious Tempest

My submission for the 12th official Brackeys Game Jam.

The theme was "Calm Before The Storm"

Mouse and Keyboard recommended

About

Protect your campsite from the elements using your leaf blower to push away hazardous weather events, and barricades to block them out.

There are 8 waves (storms) in total. Enemies can come from all four directions, indicated by blue numbers on the side of the screen. Each passing storm will get harder and between each storm there is a short period of rest. During these calm periods you can build defences by spending gold. Gold is rewarded for successfully defending against each storm.

Controls

  • Use WASD to move around
  • Hold Left Mouse to activate your leaf blower
  • Press Q to toggle build mode:
    • Scroll to select a building
    • Press / Hold Left Mouse to place buildings
    • Press / Hold Right Mouse to remove buildings
  • Press Space to start / restart

Music

The song name is "Good and Evil" made by my friend Seth Hobbin-Cooke <3

Closing thoughts / Things I missed

As with all game jams, you don't always manage to make every idea you come up with. With this being my first ever game jam, my experience was no different.

I intended for there to be more enemy types than just the tornadoes. I pictured lightning clouds that attack the player as well as other buildings, rain clouds that leave behind puddles which slow you down, and cyclones that pull the player towards them, etc etc. I also hoped to add some basic turret defences like your typical tower defence game, though in the end I only had time to add the barricades. Finally, an upgrade system for the player's leaf blower would also have made things interesting, though that always stood firmly outside my scope.

All in all, I'm incredibly happy with what I've created in just 1 week! This took a completely different way of thinking than I'm used to, and that was exciting. I can't wait to apply what I've learned for the next jam and my other long term projects!

Love the classic pixel art style of this game! The gameplay is fun too :D
